the company
Formed in 1990 by Joint Artistic Directors Alison Comley and Ann Stiddard, Theatre West is based in the 48 seat Alma Tavern in Clifton, Bristol, the only purpose built pub theatre in the region, which Theatre West was instrumental in setting up in 1997 and now programmes throughout the year. From this our home venue we have now produced 50 new plays as part of our annual 10 week autumn seasons of new work.
Outside of our main seasons we undertake a variety of projects which have recently seen us collaborating with Bristol Old Vic Writers Room, Southwest Scriptwriters and Stepping Out Theatre Company. We have also toured Latvia on several occasions where we have cemented strong cultural links.
In 2009 Metal Remains by Natalie McGrath, featured in our season the previous year, was shortlisted for the prestigious Meyer Whitworth Award and we’re delighted that Jimmy Whiteaker’s play Nostalgia from our 2009 season has been included on the 2010 shortlist.
