Formed in 1990 by Joint Artistic Directors Alison Comley and Ann Stiddard, Theatre West was until earlier this year based in the 48 seat Alma Tavern in Clifton, Bristol, the only purpose built pub theatre in the region, which Theatre West was instrumental in setting up in 1997. From this our former home venue we have now produced more than 100 new plays as part of our annual 10 week autumn seasons of new work.
Recent projects have seen us collaborating with Bristol Old Vic, The Tobacco Factory, Cheltenham Everyman, The Bikeshed in Exeter, Southwest Scriptwriters and Stepping Out Theatre Company.
Two recent productions were shortlisted for the prestigious Meyer Whitworth Award - Metal Remains by Natalie McGrath in 2009 and Nostalgia by Jimmy Whiteaker in 2010 – and we have seen many writers building solid writing careers from the early opportunities offered them by Theatre West.
